What is a Hunt Test?
Hunt tests allow you to run your dog against a set standard, not against other
dogs, as in field trials. There are three levels of testing at our hunts.  The Started
level tests a dogs natural ability only.  This is a great place to start with a young
dog or an inexperienced handler.  You and your retriever can earn the SHR or
Started Hunting Retriever title with 4 passes at this level.  The retriever will be
required to pick up two land and two water single marks at each test.  The next
level of testing is the Seasoned level.  This is typically for the dog that has seen a
season or two, as the name implies.  Here, the dog will have to show more control
and the handler will be required to safely handle a shotgun.  The test will consist
of water and land double marks, land and water blinds out to 40 yards, a walk up
and a diversion.  With a total of 40 championship points (ten total points from
started and 10 per pass at seasoned) the dog and owner will be awarded the HR
or Hunting Retriever title.  The next level of testing is the Finished level.  As the
name indicates, this is for the advanced dog that has extensive training.  A large
degree of control will be expected as the dog picks up multiple marks on both
land and water, water and land blind retrieves out to 100 yards, diversions, and
honors another dog’s work.  These dogs should be a pleasure to hunt with.  The
owner and retriever can earn the HRCH or Hunting Retriever Champion title by
earning 100 championship points (each Finished Passes earns 15 points).
Further titles can also be obtained such as UH or Upland Hunter, GRHRCH or
Grand Hunting Retriever Champion which requires passing two national tests.
Awards are also given for the retriever obtaining 500 championship points and
beyond.

As mentioned earlier, HRC tests require the handler to handle and shoot a
shotgun, making for the most realistic hunt test possible.  HRC, Inc is the only
organization “conceived by hunters for hunters”.
